the second installation of works based on facebook.

these three collages incorporate photos from the electronic dj/musician bassnectar's page.

the top and bottom collages are all "family portraits" taken of bassnectar with his audience in various cities/venues across america.

the middle collage is of photos uploaded for a kind of mini-contest in which bassnectar asked his fans to show him their "bassface" this is a compilation of all of the photos posted.

i redid the first and last from the last time they were shown in class (tried to get rid of extra white spaces between the images), and originally i was going to keep working on these, but i've decided to leave them as-is and go back to the middle collage. i want it to fit with the other two better so i may either get rid of the bassface images altogether and use comments from the family portraits, or overlay comments on the photos. not sure, will post the updated collage soon.

for quite some time now i've been really interested in the relationships people establish, develop and maintain with friends (as in in real-life friends), web acquaintances and my favorite: celebrities.

i "like" snoop dogg on facebook and have always been amazed at the comments people leave on miscellaneous photos he posts to his wall, so i decided to do something with those comments. i printed out all of the comments left on a photo of snoop posing with danny mcbridge (aka kenny powers from the show "eastbound and down") at some mtv event.

at the time that i recorded the comments and printed them out 2800 people had liked the photo, hence the name of the series. I used all but three of the comments that had been posted, so i used the remaining ones as titles for each individual piece.

Existential listmaking (cont.)

These all use the same series of words taken from the lists I found myself making while in existential crisis mode last semester. I had originally only completed a white version because that’s all I had time for, but had planned on doing two other colors. I am really glad I followed through with these, as it gives each individual collage more visual weight when seen ensemble.

Now that I have finished all of the series/collages I set out to rebuild and complete at the beginning of the semester, I am in a little bit of a bind trying to figure out what to do next. I need to seriously figure out what I want to do with the exhibition in May, but I am having trouble coming up with that extra something that will really complete the works (and also, ideally, connect everything to my project title of Digestions). Right now I am stuck on this idea of a clean and simple grid of all of the 8x8 panels on the wall (or floor?). If I do decide to go in this direction then I may spend some more time developing a new series of collages that I have been thinking about, but at the same time I don't want to create them and still feel in a few weeks that I need something more for the exhibition. Any thoughts, ideas, comments, anything would be greatly greatly appreciated!

collateral (anomalies)

When looking at my entire collection of collages at the beginning of the semester, the four that stood out were the Untitled Anomalies 1-4 . Aside from those pieces and the No Dice series, my collages tend to be muted and light in palette, so I decided to create four new pieces to add to the group and create more visual interest. I think these actually look better in person than on screen, but regardless, i am very happy with how they turned out.

digested digestions

finally: the third installment of a series i started at the end of last semester exploring the idea of digestion. for the first collage i was playing with the comments given in my mid-semester review, and the trouble i had in digesting what felt like a lot of conflicting/overwhelming information. with the second i was looking at the definition of digestion and what i had intended when naming my project digestions. in this final piece (third one down) i continued to look at old scientific texts and illustrations and found some interesting resources. I was particularly drawn to the square diagram i used (showing "the capacity of the human stomach at different ages"). there was a certain point last semester when i began wishing i had not titled my project "digestions" and began to feel boxed in by the title; when i stumbled upon this image i knew i wanted it to be a prominent piece in my final collage.

I'm really happy with these three as a series. I would love to hear feedback from others if they feel like they work together, or if the third looks disconnected/out of place.

the new marbled pieces will be posted shortly after i am paid on the 28th and can buy the inkjet transparencies i need to finish them :)

new dice

It has taken me a while to put anything up on the blog this semester because so far I've been recreating/rebuilding collages from last semester. I'm finally getting into new(ish) territory and have some collages to share.

The first here is 1 of 6 that I did last semester. I'm not going to post them all (they are pretty much the same), but I did want to show the difference in scale/alignment/spacing of the type from the first incarnation:

The next 6 are the old dice collages from last semester, but this time I rebuilt them on the 8 x 8 masonite panels that I have been using. They are significantly similar to the first dice collages, but I did have to get inventive with some in translating them from rectangle to square. I think these look/feel a lot more finished than the first group and I am happy to have added them to the pile of collages on panel that I will use in the final exhibition.

New marbled pieces are in the works and a new/final installment to my Digestion series will be up soon.
